NURMAHAL: Residents of Baina Pur village have demanded that election to elect village sarpanch should be held at the earliest as residents face difficulties.

In a representation to Jalandhar additional deputy commissioner (development), they said that the Punjab Election Commission had declared the office of sarpanch of gram panchayat Baina Pur village as vacant which was reserved for scheduled caste.

It had issued a  notification notifying the persons elected as sarpanch from block Nurmahal of the district Jalandhar under section 71 of the Punjab State Election Commission Act 1994. It says that block has 71 village panchayats out of which 70 villages have elected sarpanchs but the office of sarpanch of gram panchayat Baina Pur is vacant.

Nurmahal block development and panchayat office have sent a report in this connection to the department of rural development. Report said that office of sarpanch was reserved for scheduled caste but there is no schedule caste vote, as a result, no nomination papers were filed and no election was held.

Jalandhar additional deputy commissioner(development) had said on December 13 that administration had written to chief electoral officer Punjab Election Commission to issue corrigendum in respect of the sarpanch seat of Baina Pur village which was reserved for SC women.

Residents said that they face problems in upgrading Aadhar cards and new cards in absence of village sarpanch.
