KANPUR: CEO of Delhi's Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI), Dr Deepak Shukla, was arrested by UP Police on Saturday for his alleged role in a sensational international kidney racket which was busted in Kanpur in February. A special investigation team of Kanpur Police had taken him  into custody for questioning on Friday .

"Shukla has been booked for cheating, wrongful confinement, trafficking, criminal conspiracy and under sections of Transplantation of Human Organs Act. He has been brought to Kanpur and sent to jail," Kanpur police chief Anant Kumar said. A PSRI spokesperson said, "We are cooperating in the investigations and will do so in future."

The accused have so far surgically removed kidneys of nearly 12 people for a kickbacks and without following any legal format or document. After surgery, donors would be bundled off into general class train compartments with a paltry pay of Rs 2-3 lakh only.

Nine people have been arrested since the high-profile scam was busted, but this is the probe team's second big catch - Shukla was a suspect for long. The mastermind, Raj Kumar Rao, had been arrested in February, while the racket's global interface, Dr Ketan Kaushik, is on the run.
