Canal department detects seven cases of water theft during special drive

Move aimed at facilitating the farmers to get adequate supply of water during Paddy season

JALANDHAR: In a bid to ensure judicious use of canal water to facilitate the farmers during ongoing paddy season, the canal department has embarked a special drive during which seven cases of water theft has been detected in the district.

Divulging the details, Executive Engineer canal Davinder Singh said that out of these seven theft case five were detected at Haripur Distributary off take from jalandhar branch in Haripur Village Near Adampur Distt Jalandhar, one near chachrari on Ucha Pind Minor and one near Bilga. He said that drive has been initiated to ensure that farmers at tail end were able to make optimum utilisation of Canal water. Davinder Singh said that FIR have been registered under Northern Canal and Drainage Act against the perpetrators.

The Executive Engineer said that the move was aimed at ensuring judicious use of canal water for the farmers. He said that the perpetrators of this crime have to pay a fine amounting to 25 times of Rs 50 per acre and imprisonment upto six months. Mr Davinder Singh said that the drive would continue in coming days also to ensure that farmers get adequate canal water for irrigational purposes.
