Each Govt school in the district to get 25 medicinal plants on August 14

The concept is aimed to improve health and environment—DC Srinivasan

BATHINDA: A unique concept of Herbal Garden in every government school is launched in Bathinda on the orders of Deputy Commissioner B. Srinivasan today. The scheme is aimed to make the children aware of the health benefits of different medicinal plants.

Under this scheme, 25 medicinal plants would be provided free of cost to every school of the district so that the children may learn about the health benefits offered by the fruits, leaves and even soil of these plants.

“Since Punjab Government has already launched Mission Tandarust Punjab to improve the health of individuals and has also planned to plant 550 plants in each village of the district to commemorate 550 years of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth anniversary, we decided to add this concept under these schemes,” Srinivasan said.

He stated that the school children will be made aware about the benefits of each medicinal plant by putting up a small board in front of each shrub, sapling or tree of these plants in all the schools.

Directions have already been issued to the DFO (Divisional Forest Officer) and DEO (District Education Officer) in a meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner.

There are nearly 600 government schools in the district and each of these schools would soon be having a herbal garden of their own. The Forest Department officials are likely to offer nearly 1500 medicinal plants of numerous varieties from the government nurseries. The government nurseries are already having a huge amount of these plants which will be distributed among the government schools.

Deputy Commissioner said that there are numerous plants which help in eradicating minor and major diseases and the health benefits from the plants would be depicted on the boards to be installed in front of these plants in every school.

Education Department officials said that after the directions from Deputy Commissioner, few school heads and teachers have shown their interest in planting the medicinal plants and have also earmarked the area for the plantation on August-14. “This initiative of planting medicinal plants is welcomed by all the teachers and we have prepared the soil and made arrangement for the watering of these plants in our school,” said the school teachers in Mehma Sawai village. They added that this concept would not only help in inculcating the spirit of saving our environment but would also improve the health of the next generation.

Forest Department officials said that these medicinal plants would include traditional varieties of Harad, Bahera, Amla, Imli, Elaichi, Bilpathar, Tulsi, Ashwagandha, Suhanjana, Aloe vera and many others.
