Punjab to host Senior National Wrestling Championship after 24 years: Kartar Singh

PWA to organize National Championship at Jalandhar from 29th November-1st December dedicated to 550th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji

1400 wrestlers including Sushil Kumar, Bajrang Punia, Gurpreet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Gurpal Singh, Navjot Kaur, Gursharan Kaur, Vinesh Phogat to participate

State Championship to select Punjab team to be held from 19th-20th October: P.R. Sondhi

 CHANDIGARH: “It is a great honor for Punjab that Wrestling Federation of India allotted 64th Men and 22nd Women Senior National Wrestling Championship to the Punjab Wrestling Association. This championship would be held at M.S. Bhullar Indoor Stadium, P.A.P, Jalandhar from 29-30th November and 01st December, 2019. This Championship would be dedicated to 550th Parkash Purb of Sahib Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. In this competition, approximately 1400 outstanding wrestlers and officials from various states of India would participate.”

This was disclosed here today during a press conference by Padma Shri Kartar Singh, President, Punjab Wrestling Association. He thanked Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, President, Wrestling Federation of India for allotting the championship to Punjab.

Divulging more, Kartar Singh said that in this mega event renowned wrestlers like Sushil Kumar, Bajrang Punia, Gurpreet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Gurpal Singh, Navjot Kaur, Gursharan Kaur, Vinesh Phogat would participate and entertain the public by showcasing their skills. This championship is very important for outstanding wrestlers because winner wrestlers in each weight category would qualify for the qualifying events of the forthcoming Olympic Games-2020 scheduled in Tokyo.

Padma Shri Kartar Singh further revealed that various committees have been formed to facilitate the wrestlers and officials. The Competition would be conducted on 3 Wrestling Mats in the Indoor Stadium and six electronic score boards would be used. Padma Shri Kartar Singh also said that to popularize the wrestling and ensure that the wrestling lovers settled in country and abroad enjoy the event, there would be live telecast of the event and would also be broadcasted on various like social media and electronic media platforms. Adequate arrangements have been put in place for the boarding and lodging of the participating Wrestlers, Coaches and Officials. The arrangements with regard to stay of the women wrestlers have been made in Jalandhar City, Men wrestlers at PAP Complex and officials at various hotels.

On the occasion, P.R. Sondhi, Secretary of Punjab Wrestling Association and Former Chief Coach of Indian Wrestling team said that a Wrestling Championship for the wrestlers of Punjab for selecting Punjab team is being conducted from 19th to 20th October, 2019 at M.S. Bhullar Indoor Stadium, P.A.P, Jalandhar for selection of team of Punjab for forthcoming Senior National Wrestling Championship. He also said that they invite all the renowned wrestlers to participate in this championship and be part of the team of Punjab. The Punjab Wrestling Association would honor the winners of this championship with special prizes. He also said that the Punjab Wrestling Association has engaged Iranian Coach Moazen Gholamreza for coaching the wrestlers of Punjab and he is being given 2000 US Dollars per month as remuneration.

Among other dignitaries present on the occasion included former Vice President of the Wrestling Federation of India and former wrestler Harpal Singh Harpura, Senior Vice President of the Punjab Wrestling Association Amarpal Singh, Treasurer Gurmit Singh, Rakesh Minhas and Rajinder Singh Badheri.
