West Bengal topped in terms of Self Help Groups formed during 2017-18

NAKODAR The Government of India is implementing Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) which aims at mobilizing about 9 crore rural poor households into Self Help Groups (SHGs) in a phased manner and provide them long-term support such that they diversify their livelihoods, improve their incomes and quality of life.

In total there were 587534 SHGs formed in India during 2017-18 (Upto Dec-2017), up by 15.9% versus 507098 during 2016-17. The top 10 States/Union Territories(UTs)s with respect to SHGs formed during 2017-18 (Upto Dec-2017) were West Bengal, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh the  Ministry of Women and Child Development informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply which has been posted on website data.gov.in.

It said that the number of SHGs formed in West Bengal was 176430 during 2017-18, which accounted 30.03% of the total SHGs formed in India. It has increased by 600.9% from 25172 SHGs during 2016-17. We have seen annual decline of -47.2% in SHGs formed in Bihar from 189148 during 2016-17 to 99833 during 2017-18. Bihar accounted 16.99% of the total SHGs formed in India during 2017-18. The number of SHGs formed in Gujarat was 73141 during 2017-18, which accounted 12.45% of the total SHGs formed in India. It has increased by 209.9% from 23599 SHGs during 2016-17.

There were 52383 and 30709 SHGs formed in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh respectively during 2017-18. Maharashtra accounted for 8.92% and Madhya Pradesh accounted for 5.23% of the total SHGs formed in India during the same period.

The number of SHGs formed in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh was 29502, 25493, 23820, 16029 and 14785 respectively during 2017-18. These above mentioned top 10 states accounted for 92.27% of the total SHGs formed in India as a whole during 2017-18.
