Sensitize the food growers about the irreparable damage being caused to soil due to burning of paddy straw

JALANDHAR:
The awareness vans started by Agriculture department to sensitize the farmers against paddy straw burning were proving to be a boon for the farmers to make them aware of the hazardous effects of this practice.

The vans, which were flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma on Friday, were moving village to village for disseminating the message of clean, green and pollution free Punjab in every village. Today the vans covered 20 villages of Adampur, Jalandhar (West), Jalandhar (East), Nakodar, Rurka Kalan and Shahkot blocks of the district. During the its movement the vans apprised the farmers about the harmful effects of paddy straw burning and urged them to refrain from this inhuman practice.

Equipped with audio techniques, the vans attracted the villagers and made them realize the dangerous effects of the paddy straw burning. On the occasion pamphlets and posters depicting the demerits of this practice were also distributed to the farmers. The vans would move in all the villages of the district in every block to ensure that the information was widely disseminated.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma said that the basic purpose of moving these vans was to ensure that farmers were made to realize that the burning of paddy straw causes irreparable damage to soil health besides harming the friendly insects and killing several micronutrients of soil. He said that the burning of paddy straw also poses danger to human health as a massive surge was seen in cases of breathing problem especially amongst the children and old age people. Sharma said that farmers must be made to realize that this harmful practice was a main danger for human life and environment.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that instead of burning the paddy straw, the farmers must avail maximum benefit from the huge subsidies being offered by the state government on hi-tech machinery for paddy straw management. He said that in-situ management of straw was being encouraged as it enhances soil health thereby immensely benefiting the farmers. Sharma said that the district administration was leaving no stone unturned to save the environment of the state by checking this practice.
