Low paddy yield: state, central governments should announce special financial package to bail out farmers: Kultar Sandhwan

CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), state Kisan wing president and MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan and core committee member Kuldip Singh Dhaliwal have expressed their grave concern over low paddy yield in the state, landing the beleaguered farming community in a financial mess, stating that the state and central governments should come to the farmers’ rescue and announce special financial package to enable them to bear the losses.

In a statement issued from party headquarters in Chandigarh on Wednesday, Kultar Singh Sandhwan said that the community, which was already wrestling with the financial crisis, could not wriggle out of it, alleging that the farmers were not on the state and central governments’ agenda.

Sandhwan further added that had the union government alive to the farmers’ woes and fixed the minimum support price (MSP) in a proper way, they would not have to face such a crisis, alleging that both the erstwhile BJP-SAD and now the Congress-led government in the saddle were responsible for the sorry state of affairs.

The AAP leader said that had the government implemented the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, the farmers in the state would not have to bear the brunt, stating that the low paddy yield, ranging from 4 to 5 quintal per acre was on the higher side, which they were not in capacity to bear. He demanded that the state and central governments should announce special financial package to bail out the beleaguered community out of the financial crisis.

On the occasion, state core committee member, Kuldip Singh Dhaliwal said that if the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government could come out to the rescue of the farmers there offering them the crop price as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, why couldn’t the state government go about it?
