Three years on, Nurmahal new grain market still incomplete

Dilbag Singh | December 05, 2019 02:20 PM

NURMAHAL  Even after three years the Punjab Agricultural Marketing Board has failed to complete the construction of the new grain market.

The government had acquired over 18 acres land  on the Nurmahal-Nakodar road for the grain market and had declared new grain market as sub yard and started purchasing crop from paddy season in 2016.

As per plan new grain market has five platforms but only one platform has bricks flouring while others are muddy grounds.

Dilbag Singh a social activist and a resident of Baina Pur village in a representation to chief secretary Karan Avtar Singh   had said that Nurmahal market committee had deposited Rs 2 crore with the Punjab Mandi Board for developing new grain market but of no avail. Representation said that Nurmahal market committee collected Rs 1.5 crore and 2.12 crores as market fee in 2017 and 2018 and deposited the same with the Punjab Mandi Board.

Dilbag Singh said that despite this development of  Nurmahal grain market is a matter of concern and is agitating the  minds of farmers community.

Representation said that Punjab Mandi Board chairman Lal Singh had blocked development of Nurmahal grain market under pressure from Nurmahal Dera as he is an old devotee of Dera which has been opposing grain market from the beginning and had forcibly stopped the construction work in January 2011.

Dilbag Singh demanded that development of new grain market Nurmahal should start immediately and shops earmarked for commission agents and others should be auctioned to generate more income and to encourage development

Nurmahal Commission Agent Association president Som Dutt Passi said the farmers had been left with no option than to unload crops in open and muddy platforms. He said the association had urged the Punjab government to complete the construction of the new grain market at the earliest, but of no avail.

Farmers Jarnail Singh of Bath village and Kuldip Singh of Nurmahal said that this had exposed the government’s claim about rapid development in the state. They have demanded that the construction work on the new grain market should be completed immediately.
