FARIDKOT: “There is no report of attack of locust in the district and farmers are advised not to be nervous and they should follow the suggested measures/techniques by the agriculture department,” MK Arvind Kumar, DC Muktsar, convening the meeting of agriculture officials on Saturday evening.

“The locusts only damage the crops when it comes as swarm. Stray and a few locusts so not damage the crops,” Baljinder Singh Brar,CAO Muktsar.

Though the locust swarm has yet not arrived in any parts of the border districts to Rajasthan, yet a few locusts have been seen in some villages of Faridkot,Bathinda and Muktsar leading to rumours of locust swarms in some areas in social media.

However, agriculture department has been keeping a close vigil on the situation after a few locusts were seen in some villages of these districts.

The Surveillance teams of Faridkot district on Saturday visited some villages of district like Dhilwan Kalan,Ghugiana, Arianan wala, Burj Masta,Pindi Balochan, Ahal and Deep Singh Wala to survey the fields as precautious measures as per the directions of the state in light of any possible attack in the district.

The team comprised Ranbir Singh, Lakhvir Singh, Yadwinder Singh, all agriculture developments officers(ADOs) and Darshan Singh(AEO) visited the fields along with farmers and taught them how to identify the Locusts.

“Only 10 to 15 locusts were seen in some of the villages and farmers have been advised to survey their fields daily. At present, there is no need to get panic and spray any pesticides on the crop. They are advised just to monitor the situation. If there is any attack, they are advised to immediately contact the agriculture department, but so far there is no attack of locusts,” the team said.

Gurditta Singh, chief agriculture officer Bathinda also trashed the rumours of attack of locust swarm in any village of the district.”Only a very small number of the hopper has been seen in some villages, but there is no attack of swarm. We are keeping a close watch on the situations and farmers are made aware by making announcements in the villages,” he said.

In Muktsar district too, in villages of Rani Wala, Midda, Aspal,Virak Khera, Bhagjhari and Karampatti only a few stray Locusts have been seen.

“But they are not in position to cause any damage because they are already under the influence of insecticides and are about to die. The farmers are advised now to worry and get panic because there is no attack of the locusts in the district. They must be aware from the rumours on social media and contact agriculture department in case of any problem. The department is keeping a close vigil on the situation and one team of experts has already gone to Rajasthan where the situation is completely under control. In Rajasthan, the insecticides have been sprayed on the locust swarm and the hopper has died because of it. Only very small numbers of hopper have survived and those too would die soon because of the influence of insecticides on them,” said Baljinder Singh Brar, chief agriculture officer Muktsar.

Now the low temperature and hard soil of Punjab is not favourable for the breeding of the Locusts, the experts say.

When the swarm entered Rajasthan from Pakistan in May-June, it was reportedly 25 kilometers long and 2.5 kms wide, but it had been reduced to about only 2 kms in length in bordering districts of Punjab in Rajasthan.
