Goat farming- a lucrative profession: says Vet experts One week training concludes

Ludhiana: Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a one-week training program on Goat Farming for the upliftment of small and marginal farmers and to run goat farming as an enterprise on a commercial level. Dr. Rajesh Kasrija and Dr Ravdeep Singh, training coordinator informed that a total of 8 trainees including one women trainee from Punjab have participated in this training program.

The trainees were provided with knowledge about various topics like breeds, breeding, management, shed design, weather management, vaccination protocols, diseases & their prevention, value addition of meat, milk and economics of goat farming etc. They further told that besides the theoretical lectures, practical training on handling of goats, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals, age determination by seeing dentition and hoof management has also been provided to the trainees.

  

Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education informed that goat farming is gaining momentum in the state as young farmers and farm women are showing keen interest in goat farming. He further emphasized that value addition of goat products (milk and meat) can enhance income of farmers as goat can be projected as future food animal and it can help in economic and nutritional security of farmer. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Head, Department of Veterinary Extension Education said that Veterinary University is disseminating knowledge on Goat farming in the form of printed book and through a mobile app, which can be downloaded from Google Play store.  For any further enquiry about extension activities of GADVASU, one can contact at Farmer helpline number 0161-2414005, 2414026.
