The Rise of New Positive Role Models for the Youth of Punjab

When ‘dharti Maa’ (Mother earth: a concept held very dear to Punjabis) cried out in pain, her sons and daughters from the Punjabi singing industry stood up and relayed her plight. Due to a mainstream media frenzy over the past few years, many ordinary Indians had succumbed to the notion that Punjabis were lost to drugs and gang culture. Nothing could be further from the truth. As most Indians were unable to resist the tidal wave of BJP corporate aggression, the Punjabis made a stand; from young to old, the spirit of resistance thumps loud within each and every heart beat in every Town, Village and City.

Singers are held in great esteem in the land of the five rivers but rarely, if ever, have they made a collective stand against the central government. They have now emerged as mouth pieces of their elders and the heroes of their generation. At the forefront of this is Jass Bajwa, a singer and activist who has been, along with Kanwar Grewal and Ranjit Bawa, a viral face and voice of the farmers agitation. He featured in the smash hit soundtrack Kisan (Farmer) Anthem, a collaboration which also featured many other artists including Haryana’s Fazilpuria.

Bajwa is fearless and a very good orator, his speeches have helped to mobilize the youngsters on behalf of the kisan unions. Such is his tireless dedication to the cause that on his recent wedding date he attached the farm unions flag to his wedding car. He proudly marched in front of the vehicle with the symbol blowing gently in the breeze over his shoulder, an iconic image immortalized in Ranjit Bawa’s mega hit song Punjab Bolda, with the words ‘Viahun Gaya Munda Laake Jhanda Kirsani Da’ (He went to get married flying the flag of farming).

Female singers such as Rupinder Handa, Anmol Gaggan, Afsana Khan, and Gurlez Akthar have also sung songs related to this movement. Whilst Nimrat Khaira, Miss Pooja, the Nooran sisters, Satinder Satti, and Kaur B along with countless others have all attended the Delhi stage and spoken to the public. Even superstars such as Sidhu Moosewala and Babbu Maan have buried the mutual animosity and put all aside for the sake of the agitation, their fans can be seen sitting side by side at the Singhu border, unthinkable a few months ago. Along with Sidhu and Maan other notable personalities such as Ammy Virk, Sunanda Sharma, and Gippy Grewal have visited and addressed the crowds.

Seniors such as Sardool Sikander and Amar Noorie have spoken at many stages from the very beginning displaying their loyalty to their land and people. Other artists, however, such as Hans Raj Hans, Gurdas Maan, and Guru Randawa have not exactly covered themselves in glory during this struggle. Hans Raj Hans is a sitting BJP MP from Delhi. He has made some strange statements claiming the laws were good but there had been a 'khami' (slight shortcomings) in the way Modi Ji & co had explained them. A lot pressure has been applied that he should resign and join the common people who made him a superstar by booking his shows and purchasing his music but thus far he has chosen to serve his BJP masters in Delhi.

Gurdas Maan and Guru Randawa stayed silent on the topic initially, probably hoping it would go away. Gurdas Ji has been embroiled in several controversies of late and Guru Randawa is friends with the corporate Ambani family and has attended and sung at his private parties. He is also launching several brands, with which he could probably do with Ambanis support. They only posted on social media after intense pressure from the public, who do not believe their support to be sincere. Diljit Dosanjh on the other hand gifted one crore in aid and also addressed the farmers from the Delhi stage. He also defended the uprising against crazed ‘twitter zombie’ Kangana Ranaut, winning the hearts of Punjabis again after many were questioning his role in Udta Punjab (an exaggerated movie showing overwhelming numbers of young Punjabis to be junkies, which has now proven to be totally untrue.)

Punjabi culture has changed. This is largely because the public mindset has altered. Singers are only a mirror to the society they live in, they reflect realities in melody and verse. This movement has shown how crucial a role artist’s play in our world and how effective they can be in creating change. Nobody knows what will happen amidst the current tussle between the central government and the Indian farmers…but with conscientious, proactive young people such as Jass Bajwa at the forefront the future will always remain bright and optimistic.
