Central University of Punjab organized Webinar on Gender Equality – Can it be a reality?

CHANDIGARH: Central University of Punjab (C.U.P.) under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari organized Webinar on ‘Gender Equality – Can it be a Reality?’ The keynote speaker of this programme was Dr. Meena Chandawarkar, Chief Advisor – Quality Assurance, Basaveshwar Veerashaiva Vidya Vardhak Sangha (B.V.V.Sangha), Bagalkot and Former Vice Chancellor, Karnataka State Women’s University, Vijayapura.

The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by Prof. Anjana Munshi, Dean Research where she mentioned that despite many efforts, we need to work a lot towards improving the situation of Gender Equality in our society because as per the Global Gender Gap Report published by the World Economic Forum in the year 2020, India got 112th position out of 153 countries participated.  

 

While addressing the participants, Keynote Speaker Dr. Meena Chandawarkar mentioned that even though our ancient values have given us the ideology of Vasudeva Kutumbakam & our holy books guided us to worship the Goddesses & respect women, but still, women are ill-treated in our country. She pointed out illiteracy, poverty, patriarchal gender norms & the socio-economic dependency of women as the major reasons behind gender discrimination & violence against women. She put a light on various Constitutional Provisions, Legislative Acts and Government Schemes which are created to enhance the state of Gender Equality. She added, that the innovative reforms introduced in ‘National Education Policy-2020’ will make quality education accessible to women, transgender and marginalized sections of our society and empower them to develop the necessary skills to actualize the vision of ‘Atam Nirbhar Bharat’. She appealed that women need to Stand for their rights, raise their voice against all forms of violence and work towards their socio-economic independence to improve their situation in society.

Prof. Monisha Dhiman expressed her gratitude towards the keynote speaker for sharing valuable information with participants. She thanked everyone for making this programme a success.
