Devi Wala road Kotkapura, broken bridge over Sewerage channel.

The local shopkeepers alleged that it has ruined their business as few people opted for this damaged road.

Dust continues to fly exposing them to health hazards.

People from more than 6 villages have to travel 7 kms extra to reach town.

"The people have to travel 7 kms extra, which our business is gone. The road was built after many years, but dug up again,"Roresh,a shopkeeper.

Faridkot: About two Kilometers stretch of Devi Wale road in Kotkapura , which was dug up to lay sewerage pipes about two years back, has now turned worse than a Kuccha road.

The damaged road has not only badly affected the small business of the locals which run huts etc along the road side, but it also hits hard by exposing them to many health hazards as dust makes it difficult to breath, settles on their valuable commodities and makes everything dirtier.

The road connects more than half a dozen villages including Bir Sikhan wala, Nathewala, Devi Wala,Kothe Inder Singh, Sirsari, Kotsukhia, Bhalur and even Nathuwala apart from many other small localities to Kotkapura.Even it is the shortest connecting road to the town to National Highway.

The private company which was responsible for laying sewerage and drinking water pipes and construction of the STP(sewerage treatment plant) had dug the well constructed road under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak yojana about two years back. But allegedly due to the lack of funds, the work moves at a snail's pace.

The sewerage pipes were laid upto the STP located on Devi Wala road  covering about 2 kms . Though the pipes have been allegedly laid , there is no recarpeting of the road so far.

Due to the digging up of this connecting road, the people from all these villages have to travel about 7 kms more to reach Kotkapura opting National highway over this link road.

“As the road is badly damaged now, there are hardly any travelers on it. It has badly affected our business because the customers go other ways. Besides a big loss of business, we find it very difficult to breath here sitting in our shops because the dust keeps flying all day. It also settles inside our houses and the people of two wards 7 and 8 are suffering a lot,” said Naresh Kumar, a shopkeeper.

When the sewerage pipes were being laid up to the STP, the contractor also dismantled a pulley (small bridge) over the sewerage nulla at point of joining the pipes coming from two sides, Prem Nagar and Devi Wala road, which has separated/disconnected the two roads from each other.

“If some vehicles enter from the Bir Sikhan Wala road, those can not reach the Devi Wala road which leads to Bus stand due to the broken bridge. The other road in Prem Nagar is yet to be constructed properly. Now interlock tiles are being laid on it, so it is blocked at places of work. The people with small vehicles, only bikes try taking risks crossing the pipes,” said Harjeet Singh, a local.

“The contractor laid the pipes by destroying the bridge on Sewerage nulla, but even did not care to smoothen the deep ditches /pits by doing some earth work. Now some people try to cross over it with bikes and sometimes they fall. It could lead to loss of life any time,” Harjeet said.

Though this is a 24 hours problem for thousands of the people from the villages and town, yet it has failed to get any attention from the authorities.

The locals alleged that before the municipality elections, earth was deposited on some place and it was razed  by machine to make it show that the construction work would get started soon.

“But now this dust flies into the eyes. We think that the work would move on it before assembly elections,” said a local.

Ghanshayam Mittal, who has won from ward number 7, when contacted over phone said that the local municipality is yet to be formed and the road would be constructed shortly by sewerage board.

Balwinder Singh,EO Municipal committee said that the road will be constructed by water supply and sewerage board now.

SDM Kotkapura Amarinder Singh Tiwana could not be contacted for his version.
