Rainfall, humid weather may impact the paddy yield, rains disturb pollination leading to chaff

FARIDKOT: On Saturday Faridkot received heavy rainfall leading to the worries of the paddy growers whose crop had grown the ears and on pollinating stage.

The farmers said that the main PR varieties are now growing ears and at the stage of pollination apart from the long term varieties.

“My paddy crop variety PR 122 has been growing ears for the past three or four days. Thus it is at the pollination stage. The rainfalls disturb pollination leading to the chaff,ie, empty grains in the crop. The chaff is the major cause of reduction of the yield of paddy,” said Sukhjinder Singh, a farmer from village  Niamiwala.

According to the Chief Agriculture Officer Faridkot,Moga, Dr Balwinder Singh, Faridkot and Moga districts have received about 20 and 24 MM rainfall respectively on Saturday while Sunday mostly remained dry overcast with clouds.

The CAO said that not much damage has been caused by the rainfalls because most of the crop is still short of pollination stage.

“Only a small area may have some impact, but in Faridkot and Moga, the main crop is yet to grow ears. The cotton crop is grown on only small areas in both the districts. But the farmers should empty the fields of cotton if the rain water is standing in that. No rainfall occurred on Sunday and we hope the weather will clear soon,” said Dr Balwinder Singh,CAO Farikdot.

The farmers said that rainfall, hot and humid weather with cloudy sky is bad for the paddy crop as it leads to fungal diseases and insects attacking the crop. Fast winds and rainfall disturbs the pollination as well.
