Maharashtra: Prominent social activist Anna Hazare has called off his proposed hunger strike against the Maharashtra government's decision to allow the sale of liquor in supermarkets and kirana stores. Declared on Sunday he has ‘suspended’ the strike as the state government has assured him it will consider citizens' views before going ahead with the decision.
Anna Hazare was to sit on an indefinite hunger strike from February 14 against the new liquor policy of the Maharashtra government.
Hazare said the state government secretary had assured him that he would consider the views of the people before going ahead with the new liquor policy. A Gram Sabha was organized in Hazare village of Ahmednagar district on Sunday.
"I told the villagers that now the state government has decided to keep the cabinet decision for suggestions and objections from citizens and only after their approval, the government will take a final decision," Hazare said. That's why I have decided to postpone tomorrow's hunger strike.
