Rise and rise and fall of SAD, a journey from" Panth in danger to corporate house"shift from the old generation to the 3rd one

Raghbir Singh Brar | March 12, 2022 09:23 PM

A party once garnering votes on Panthak issues, allegedly turned into a corporate and  mafia Raj which led to its fall.

No introspection was done as it was never able to form its government solely.

Faridkot: This is the third generation now  when the SAD has lost”Panthak” agenda and the third generation of voters wanted a change.

Particularly above 18 to somehow 35.

The change in the Badal family was also apparent  when it started working on business model, earning every penny with hook or crook, under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal.

It was the time of my grandfather and father, who like most of the village electorate, were isolated from the new world and always determined to cast their votes in favor of “Panth” and SAD government was formed.

Now I am 48 years old voter, and people of my age or above has no Panthak agenda before us.We are fed up of a system which humiliate us at every stem and encroaches upon our rights.

Despite the numerous negative effects of internet connectivity, the youth is well aware of their rights. Mobile and Jio, how much we criticize the corporate for its alleged anti farming stance, has widened our thought.

Panth for me and my like young of generation is the respect of our holy book”Guru Granth Sahib, but it was disrespected during rule of SAD.It is not the SAD.

Whether we are not having a physical appearance of being a baptized Sikhs, with flowering beard and other symbols, but SAD is not a Panth for us.

We are more Sikhs than they are from the spirit and more secular than they are.

Until the SAD was under its supremo, Parkash Singh Badal, Panthak issues were dominant or the narrative was”Panth in danger because of the enemy congress”. But with the change of guard, this issue was gone and next generation, both of the SAD and electorate was dominant with new ideas.

Internet was knocking at the doors of the people and SAD was allegedly trying to control, but allegedly monopolize Punjab in all the ways.

Sukhbir Singh Badal often claimed that SAD would rule for 25 years now. But he did not introspect the simmering tension among the voters.

In 2007, SAD had got only 48 seats while it managed to form the government with 19 seats of its”younger brother”,BJP. It had total 68 seats in 2017.

Again, in 2012, SAD won 56 and its alliance partner got 12 totaling to 68.But again SAD did not introspect that on its own, it has only got 56 seats,3 less than to form a government in the Punjab assembly with 117 seats.

The SAD-BJP government allegedly came to power in the second consecutive term allegedly because of the Peoples’ Party Of Punjab, founded by Manpreet Singh Badal, estranged nephew of Parkash Singh Badal, which got the floating votes cutting into the congress votes because the voters then too wanted to see a change.

Then in 2017, SAD could only win 15 seats while BJP only 3, making a way for Captain Amarinder Singh government of INC.

AAP lagged behind because of mainly two reasons. One it was reluctant to announce its CM face, allegedly because of Kejriwal's personal ambition, second the best ever performance of Captain Amarinder Singh from 2002 to 2007 when he even terminated river water sharing agreement, timely procurement of crops, tightening noose around corrupt and many other public welfare works.

Now SAD’s fall was because of the public outcry against drugs, Chiita had become synonymous of it. Businesses were destroyed, unemployment was there and goon-ism had been on its rise.

SAD Halqa incharges,MLAs and its workers, particularly close to the Halqa in charges and MLAs had started harassing the dissidents.

When I used to report in the field for my newspaper, the businessmen, shopkeepers and people a little aware of political system were so afraid that they did not muster courage to speak against the government for the backlash.

It was only backwards who spoke on the record challenging the system.

The police stations were brought under constituencies so that only SAD voters could get their works done and they could not bypass the local SAD boss.

A system of village and Mohalla level leaders was created.

If one wanted to get even his genuine work done, he had to approach the local leader.Bypassing him was impossible. The rivals were harassed and they were not the beneficiaries of the government schemes as the local SAD leaders did not corroborate their claims.

The locals leaders had stooped so low that in my village Bir Sikhan Wala, then village Sarpanch Gurmeet Singh denied to AAP voters in 2017 singling them out that they did not cast their votes to SAD.

Its led to a revolt among the minds of people. They decided to teach the SAD and congress a lesson 2017, but due to allegedly a fixed match, the voters failed. But SAD started towards a downfall, it only got 15 seats and BJP got only 3.

In 2022, people of Punjab again rejected the Congress and SAD, giving a landslide victory to AAP. The SAD got only 3.

From the above figures, we can also conclude that since 2007, SAD was not able to form its government on its own and it was always dependent on its partner BJP.

Alleged all kinds of mafia, from cable to sand mining, taking possessions of properties, direct interference of the local leaders in gran markets to get commission for loading/unloading and beating up rivals or silencing the voice of dissent, came into existence.

The alleged culture of keeping and shielding gangsters led to a disastrous situation.A large number of youth was later on killed this way and many houses were destroyed.

Most of the youth left to have drugs, snatching, committing crimes and unemployed. Traditional media was allegedly tamed.

SAD was turned allegedly into a corporate instead of a Panthic party. It lost its agenda of Punjab and Punjabiat for its personal interest and due it , it could not resist the rise of BJP.

When its ties severed with the BJP, it had lost all its issues because it did not have any particularly of Punjab. It was always toeing the line of the BJP for its personal interests.

Farmers's agitation further alienated it and as a last resort, Harsimrat Kaur Badal had to resign from the union ministry to survive in Punjab.

Punjabi diaspora abroad and reach of internet also contributed to its fall.

They asked why we had a different kind of system in foreign lands while we do not have it in Punjab.

To accommodate Sukhbir Singh Badal, the senior leadership was allegedly shown the door for its voice of dissent.

The development was only limited to the construction works of bridges and roads instead of generation of employment, free medical facilities, cap on private educational institutions fees and development of basic infrastructure was not there..

Sacrilege issue and Behbal Kalan firing further deviated it from its main plant of Sikh voters in rural areas and Dera factor hit the party hard.

Now the people will not welcome any religious appeal by the anybody to appeal the Sikh electorate to come together as the Badal family did now read written on the wall well in time.
