CHANDIGARH: Two-day Bharat Bandh is being observed starting from Monday. A nationwide strike called by various joint forum of central trade unions, including banking staff, to protest against government policies affecting workers, farmers, and people.

Essential services might be affected during the Bharat Bandh.

“We are expecting participation of over 20 crore formal and informal workers with mass mobilisation of workers across the country during the strike on March 28 and 29 to protest against government policies,” All Indian Trade Union Congress General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur told news agency PTI on Sunday.

The workers unions of Haryana Roadways have supported the two-day Bharat Bandh. Roadways employees have blocked the wheel in support of the strike and due to this the commuters are facing problems. Especially girl students and pass holders are seen standing at the bus stands in large numbers. The number of buses plying on the road is very less and people have to wait on the roads. Pallavi of Ladwa in Kurukshetra said that I waited at the bus stop for about an hour. The bus was not found and due to this I had to return home.

Impact in Delhi, Haryana to South India, partial strike in banks

AITUC leader Amarjeet Kaur said the strike was called in the coal mining areas of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, besides Assam, Haryana, Delhi, West Bengal, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, Goa and Odisha. There is also support from industrial sectors. He said that services of banks and insurance sector have also been affected due to the strike. At the same time, its partial effect is being seen on the steel and oil sectors. This strike has also affected the functioning of banks. However, this effect is being seen only partially because only a part of the bank employees' unions is supporting this strike.

The impact of the strike is prominent in eastern India as many branches of public sector banks there are closed, All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) General Secretary CH Venkatachalam said. In the other regions, branches are open as officers are present but services are being impacted due to many employees participating in the strike, he said.

Bank unions are protesting against the government move to privatise two public sector banks as announced in this year's Union Budget. They are also demanding an increase in interest rate on deposits and reduction in service charges.

On Sunday, the Union power ministry issued an advisory to all state governments and electricity authorities to prepare themselves to ensure maintenance and reliability of the electricity grid during the bandh.
