NURMAHAL Set up to give healthy life by bringing drug addicts into the mainstream, the Punjab Government’s (Out-patient Opioid Assisted Treatment) OOAT clinic Nurmahal is proving an effective tool for drug addicts to be willing for detoxification.

In Nurmahal OOAT clinic, more than 900 patients, wishing to give up drugs, have been registered so far., Dr Ramesh Pal senior medical officer (SMO) at Nurmahal community health centre said that patients coming to this OOAT clinic are given unique identification numbers, which are linked to the Aadhar Card. Under the OOAT project, patients are registered online so that the officers can monitor every single dose of the medicine given to the patient and ensure the prohibition of misuse or resale of the drug. Doctor Paul said daily more than 600 patients are administered oral medication drug at the centre

SMO said that this OOAT clinic is proven to be effective to bring those drug addicts into the mainstream, who were taking drugs through injection, long-term drug addicts or unable to quit the drugs adding that such patients are given medicine before the staff on daily basis.

SMO said that if the patient has gone to any part of the state, he can visit the nearby OOAT clinic and take medicine after showing his identification.

Giving further details, he said that patients who came to quit drugs are given treatment through OPD  according to the type and quantity of drug and  OOAT clinic is purely OPD based and people only with the severe problem are admitted in indoor facilities adding that patient is provided with the necessary medicines and gradually the medicines are reduced, and the patient is referred to the drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre.

He said that youngsters taking medicines from the OOAT clinic have refrained from drugs and they have now gradually come back into the mainstream.

Youngsters coming to get treatment in this OOAT clinic said that after taking medicines from this centre they are now feeling happy. They said that due to expensive drugs, where on one side they were embarrassing their family, on the other hand, they were living a life of hell too, now after treatment, they have started enjoying life.

Meanwhile, resentment prevails among residents against the failure of the district police authorities to provide proper security at the local civil hospital. They said the OOAT clinic in the civil hospital is increasingly becoming a source of nuisance for residents and medical authorities. They said that drug addicts daily visit centre for doses and create a law-and-order problem.

SMO said that he has requested the local police to provide adequate police security.

There are many such centres working in the Jalandhar district
