Delhi Covid-19: Masks mandatory in public places again, Rs 500 fine for violators

New Delhi: The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Wednesday has made masks mandatory again in public places in the national capital. It also reintroduced a fine of Rs 500 for violation of the mask rule in view of the deterioration in the Covid-19 situation, according to DDMA.

The decisions were taken during a DDMA review meeting attended by LG Anil Baijal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot, and senior officials from the health department.

However, on  Tuesday itself, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the government is not planning to impose a fine for not wearing face masks in Delhi. Sisodia had mentioned, “We need to learn to live with Covid-19 as it will stay longer; we will take strict actions if the cases spike more.”

As per the official notice, the DDMA has decided to allow schools, markets and other economic activities to continue in adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The authorities have also decided to conduct random tests at metro stations, markets, and other public places to curb the spread of infection. Drives will be carried out in markets and other crowded places to maintain social distancing, and enforce Covid-19 protocols, the official said.

The Delhi government removed the mask requirement earlier this month. In the light of the recent surge, however, experts have said that masks need to be enforced strictly.

On Tuesday, Delhi reported 632 fresh Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 4.42%. On Monday, the daily tally was 501, while the positivity rate was 7.72%.
