'Asani' cyclonic storm will intensify in next 24 hours, high alert in West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee's visit postponed

Kolkata: 'Asani' cyclonic storm likely to intensify further in the next 24 hours, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.

The cyclone distance of 940 km from Visakhapatnam and 1000 km from Puri in Odisha. The state is on high alert in view of the cyclone may reach West Bengal on May 10. Preparations are going on in the coastal areas of Bengal to deal with the cyclone. Control rooms are opening in each sub-division and headquarters of the coastal districts. 5 emergency response teams are ready for the cyclonic storm. NDRF, SDRF, Coastal Guard and Navy are on alert.

West Beengal CM’s 3-day program postponed

Meanwhile, Due to the cyclonic storm, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s district tour program has postponed. TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh said that in view of the 'Asani' storm, the 3-day program of CM Mamata Banerjee in West Midnapore and Jhargram has been rescheduled from May 10, 11 and 12 to May 17, 18 and 19.

IMD said that there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in the southern part of the state including the coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal capital Kolkata from Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea and off West Bengal and Odisha coasts from May 10 till further notice.

 

According to the Meteorological Department, the sea condition along the Odisha coast will become rough on May 9 and very rough on May 10. The wind speed in the sea is expected to increase to 80 to 90 kilometers per hour on May 10.
