COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from his post amid the worst economic crisis in the country for the last month.

On Sunday, his younger brother and Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had asked Mahinda Rajapaksa to step down in a meeting on the economic situation in Sri Lanka. He had said that he should resign from his post amid the ongoing political crisis in the country.

Significantly, the economic situation in Sri Lanka has become so bad that people are on the verge of starvation. The prices of food items are skyrocketing. People have taken to the streets against the government. Labor and business organizations have gone on strike against the government. Last week, students tried to enter the Sri Lankan parliament against the government.

On Monday, following reports that Mahinda Rajapaksa may offer to step down as prime minister, a violent clash erupted outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's office.

Pro-government groups attacked protesters and more than 20 people were injured in the ensuing violence. The government then imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed army troops in the capital.

Mahinda Rajapaksa took to Twitter to urge citizens to exercise restraint. He wrote, "I urge our general public to exercise restraint and remember that violence only begets violence. The economic crisis we're in needs an economic solution which this administration is committed to resolving."

However, all the ministers of the Sri Lankan government have resigned from their posts. The government had appealed to the opposition leaders to help run the government by becoming ministers, but the opposition also raised its hands.
