Nakodar: Eight teachers are holding the fort at government senior secondary school, Nakodar. The government has failed to fill the vacant posts in the school, which has strength of 226. There is no Punjabi, Math, Drawing, Vocational, Physical training teachers.  Officiating principal Vandhana Sharma said that there are 21 posts of teachers at the school of which 13 are vacant. Parents say their children’s future is at stake. They say they have taken up the issue with the Punjab education department but to no avail.  Vandhana Sharma said she had brought the matter to the notice of the officials concerned.

She said that school has no playgrounds as these were used for the construction of Government College building adding that a portion of building has been declared unsafe by public works department.

Mrs Sharma said that rain water has become a problem for school management as government college building base is high and its drains for leading off water from roofs are towards school side.

Meanwhile Nakodar municipal committee president Aditya Bhatara, who had fought a legal battle for school up-gradation from metric to senior secondary level, has expressed concern over dilapidated school building. In a communication to director general school education, Bhatara said school building is very old and has become dangerous and should be demolished and new building be constructed.

Inquires revealed that school is working since 1856.
