Farmers earn from lesser agri inputs, higher returns

Basmati rates increase as compared to last year

Bathinda: The elaborate campaign Mission Tandarust Punjab launched for the overall holistic development of Punjab by Chief Minister Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh has started warming up the pockets of farmers. Cutting down on the cost of agriculture inputs as well as the use of chemical-laced pesticides in the soil, the farmers are smiling their way to banks.

Under Mission Tandarust Punjab, the agriculture department has run an extensive campaign motivating farmers not to use five dangerous chemicals and the results of this campaign have now started showing positive results. This year Punjab farmers have fetched better prices for basmati as compared to the previous year. The basmati is being bought at around Rs 3350, which is more than the last year.

The secretary agriculture department Kahan Singh Pannu said that the harmful chemicals farmers were using for basmati cultivation was finding its way into the product in form of residue, which made it difficult to sell basmati in the international market. He added that basmati fetches good price only when its properly exported.  This year, farmers abide by the directions of the agriculture department in this context and judiciously used the requisite chemical thereby fetching higher prices. "Farmers not only ended up spending lesser in the form of agriculture input on basmati crop but also earned higher profits by producing better quality basmati," he added.

Giving more information Deputy Commissioner Bathinda Praneet added that the agriculture department had conducted villages' wise awareness camps that have led to the better quality production of basmati. Consequently, basmati this year has fetched Rs 1000 more than the last year. Following the campaign around 3000 MT of urea lesser has been used and use of DAP to has registered nosedive.

So far 1126975 MT of paddy has reached the grain markets, while last year for the same corresponding time period it was 1233410 MT. It has been sold at around Rs 1770 per quintal this year, while 1970 MT basmati has arrived in the district so far.

Meanwhile, adaptive to the weather conditions of Malwa, the cotton crop has already surpassed its arrival record in the market. Last year till 14 Nov 2, 37, 518 quintals of arrival was recorded which is 2, 42, 720 quintals for the corresponding period this year. Last year cotton crop had fetched Rs 3860 to Rs 4760 per quintal while this year the crop has fetched Rs 5150 to Rs 5500 per quintal. Better returns have fuelled interest of farmers in going for cotton production the coming season. It is expected that the area under cultivation will increase by 30 percent for the 2019 crop.

Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Guraditta Singh Sidhu stated that cotton cultivators have got better returns following the guidelines of the agriculture department and using 2 to 3 times lesser pesticides. This year the agriculture department is ensuring that no farmer burns paddy stubble and instead sows wheat directly. This will ensure better soil health and even better wheat yield.
