Removal of CBI Chief Alok Verma by Modi is arbitrary and mala fide: Sukhpal Khaira

Punjab Tribune Bureau | January 11, 2019 04:34 PM

CHANDIGARH- Sukhpal Singh Khaira MLA and president of Punjabi Ekta Party(PEP) today strongly condemned the 'ceremonial and unconstitutional' removal of CBI chief Alok Verma from his post within 24 hours of his reinstatement by the Supreme Court of India.

In a statement issued here, Khaira said that Prime Minister Narinder Modi had manipulated the removal of Verma which is arbitrary and mala fide. He said that now it has become crystal clear that Prime Minister was hell bent to remove Verma due to fear of being exposed in some 'fishy' deals', possibly in the raffle deal. He said that accusing fingers were raised on Prime Minister when he sent Verma on forced leave November last due to mid-night drama to take charge from CBI chief and replace him with his favourite officer much junior in rank.

PEP President said that BJP government at centre was misusing CBI to gag its political opponents and eroding the credibility of prestigious investigating agency. He said that CBI was no allowed free hand in extradition of fugitives and economic offenders who are hiding in foreign countries. He said that Modi was responsible for spoiling reputation not only of CBI but other constitutional institutes like office of Chief Vigilance Officer (CVC), , Reserve Bank of India, Election commission of India and even tried to influence top judiciary by arm twisting methods.

Khaira said that for the first time in the history of India the four senior most judges of Supreme Court were forced to hold press conference against 'outside' interference in the working of top court and for the first time in history the centre government made blatant misuse of CVC to act against CBI chief. He stated that CBI was only premier agency on which people had some hope of justice. The stage has come when three states of West Bengal, Chhatisgarh and Andhra Pradesh have withdrawn general permission given to CBI to investigate cases. Other states may also follow the suit.

He added that Modi had lowered the prestige of Indian constitution in the eyes of world and it would take centuries to re-establish the authority of our constitution bodies.

Khaira also reminded that Modi led NDA government at centre had ruined yet another constitutional body of Lokpal. At the time of Anna Hazare movement, the BJP had promised to appoint a Lokpal but even after four years no appointment is made till date. The Supreme Court of India has only last week sought an explanation from centre government about appointing a search committee and methodology for the appointment of Lokpal. Khaira asked Modi what were his fears behind not appointing a Lokpal?
